Part of my job is to review student attendance, which is the foundation for learning and achievement. I am here to work with you and help problem-solve any issues preventing you from getting your child to school. October is when I begin to see absences start adding up, so there are a few things I want every parent to know regarding our district's attendance policy for elementary students:
- 5 or more absences in a semester (unexcused AND excused) are considered excessive. When a student has 5 or more absences, I will review them and consider attendance interventions and problem-solving with you, the parent. Sometimes interventions and/or problem-solving are unnecessary at this point.
-10 or more absences in a semester (unexcused AND excused) sends a notification letter to your mailing address and requires a meeting resulting in an attendance agreement, OR we will automatically require a healthcare provider excusal (Dr.'s note) for any future absences.
Please remember to make every attempt to notify the school in a timely manner when your child will be absent, and bring a Dr.'s note whenever possible.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding attendance, please contact me or feel free to stop by my office during conferences this week. Again, I am here to help!
Please consider that this is district policy. If children don't show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into post-secondary opportunities. Continuing attendance concerns beyond these measures can result in truancy court filing.
