During Red Ribbon Week, and our entire Personal Safety Unit, I encourage students to go home and discuss any questions or concerns they have with their parent or guardian.
Red Ribbon Week is a campaign put on by the National Family Partnership that promotes drug prevention education and celebrates being drug-free. My lessons this week had an age-appropriate focus on being safe, healthy, and drug-free. The following topics were discussed: K-1: What is Safe and Not Safe? What things are safe to put in our bodies vs. what is not safe. We connected this with stranger safety- what to do around strangers and how we NEVER, EVER take food, candy, medicine, or ANYTHING from strangers. 2-3: In second and third grade we talked about being safe in regards to medicine. What is the purpose of medicine, why do we have to be careful with medicine, who is it safe to take medicine from, and how it can be dangerous. 4-5: Grades 4 & 5 watched a video where Donald Brown, a NFL football player, discusses how finding his passion and saying no to drugs helped him get where he is today. We then discussed peer pressure and the million different reasons WHY and HOW to say no to peer pressure. |
